First Reading of the Emancipation Proclamation of President Lincoln, From the original picture painted at the White House in 1864. Carpenter spent six months in the White House while he painted. The painting is displayed at the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C.

Our print is in very good condition and shows Lincoln's first reading of the proclamation to his cabinet, which took place on July 22, 1862. Depicted, from left to right are Edwin M. Stanton, Secretary of War, Salmon P. Chase, Secretary of the Treasury, President Lincoln, Gideon Welles, Secretary of the Navy, Caleb B. Smith, Secretary of the Interior, William H. Seward, Secretary of State, Montgomery Blair, Postmaster General, and Edward Bates, Attorney General.

Simon Cameron and Andrew Jackson are featured as paintings.

The Emancipation Proclamation was issued on September 22, 1862 and went into effect on January 1, 1863.
