About the artist:

Hugh Douglas Hamilton (1739–1808) was an Irish artist renowned for his portrait work. He initially gained recognition for his delicate pastel portraits, particularly small oval pieces, which became highly popular in the 18th century. After establishing himself in Dublin, Hamilton spent time in London and later Italy, where he further honed his craft, transitioning to full-scale oil paintings upon his return to Ireland in the late 1770s. His subjects included prominent figures of the time, such as aristocrats, politicians, and cultural icons.

Hamilton's ability to capture both the physical likeness and the personality of his subjects distinguished his work. His contributions to portraiture, particularly in Ireland, are still celebrated today, making him one of the most important Irish artists of his era.
